Mechanics 101
Pressure
Robots use fluids (gasses or liquids) under pressure to produce motion and force in mechanical devices.
Pneumatic
systems use a gas (usually air) as the pressure conducting medium.
Hydraulic
systems use a liquid (water or hydraulic fluid) as the pressure conducting medium.
The force produced by a cylinder is the product of the fluid pressure and the area of the piston in the cylinder exposed to the air.
Pressure (in America) is usually measured in PSI (Pounds per Square Inch).
